Post-datum: 2022-11-07, Microchip Technology

The PIC18F "K40" series continues the long-term innovation tradition of Microchip in 8-bit mcu by introducing popular core independent peripherals (CIPs) into the PIC18 product line. These cost optimized mcu consist of 10 devices, ranging in size from 16 KB to 128 KB of flash memory, and the package options range from 28 pins to 64 pins. They are well suited for a wide range of applications and market segments, including touch sensing, industrial control, consumer, automotive, and the Internet of Things (IoT). These devices include a complete core independent peripheral device for safety critical applications (CRC/memory scanning, window watchdog timer, and hardware limit timer), up to seven hardware PWMs, and multiple communication interfaces. In addition, the series also provides intelligent analog peripherals, including zero crossing detection (ZCD) constant current I/O, on-chip comparators, and ADC with computation (ADC (2)).

CIPs abstract the commonly required system functions into flexible on-chip hardware modules. This not only increases the throughput and CPU bandwidth of PIC18F "K40" series, but also significantly reduces the software design work required to structure these functions. For example, ADC (2) is an intelligent analog-to-digital converter, which accelerates the data acquisition and signal analysis functions required for sensor interface applications (such as capacitive touch sensing). ADC (2) is independent of signal analysis functions such as CPU processing average, filtering, oversampling and automatic threshold comparison.
